I don’t remember ever watching so many own goals in one international tournament, but Euro 2024 has definitely raised the bar. I bet there have been more in other competitions, but I’ve counted ten goals scored against their own team up until July 7, at the end of the quarterfinals.
In some cases, like Portugal vs Czechia, Spain vs Italy, or France vs Belgium, the own goal made all the difference. Turkey is the only team that has scored twice against its own goal.
Here’s the tally until July 7 (click on the links to watch the own goals):
1. Germany 5 vs Scotland 1 on June 14: Antonio Rüdiger (GER).
2. Austria 0 vs France 1 on June 17: Maximilian Wöber (AUS).
3. Portugal 2 vs Czechia 1 on June 18: Robin Hranác (CZE).
4. Croatia 2 vs Albania 2 on June 19: Klaus Gjasula (ALB).
5. Spain 1 vs Italy 0 on June 20: Riccardo Calafiori (ITA).
6. Turkey 0 vs Portugal 3 on June 22: Samet Akaydin (TUR).
7. Netherlands 2 vs Austria 3 on June 25: Donyell Malen (NET).
Second round
8. Spain vs Georgia on June 30: Robin Le Normand (SPA).
9. France vs Belgium on July 1st: Jan Vertonghen (BEL).
10. Netherlands vs Turkey on July 7: Mert Müldür (TUR).
